Vino sospeso and “Season[s], a Tale of Creation”: two new works created specially for the Mind-blowing exhibition

Published 07 March 2019

For “Mind-blowing! When art and design take on glass”, the new temporary exhibition at La Cité du Vin in Bordeaux from 15 March to 30 June 2019, two new works have been specially created and commissioned by the Fondation pour la Culture et les Civilisations du Vin. The first is Vino Sospeso, the nomadic “drinking object” by designer matali crasset, which gave rise to the production of a film by Jérôme de Gerlache called “Season[s], a Tale of Creation”.

Vino Sospeso: the nomadic “drinking object”

The Fondation pour la Culture et les Civilisations du Vin commissioned designer matali crasset with the creation of a brand new work.

“Take a step back, look at uses from an outsider’s point of view. Smooth things out, get rid of all that is superficial” declares matali crasset. The workshop she was entrusted with, in collaboration with the teams at the CIAV in Meisenthal, aimed to reveal the design and production process of a glass object, showing that it is not just a question of aesthetics but is above all grounded in real life. From a designer’s thoughts on the notion of the tasting ritual as a collective experience to the finished product, Mind-blowing! presents each stage that led to the concretisation of this unique project.

Unique and ethereal, Vino sospeso, the nomadic “drinking object” hangs from the branches of an imaginary tree in the exhibition, like an invitation to a tasting surrounded by nature.
The creation of this work led to the production of a film by Jérôme de Gerlache: “Season[s], a Tale of Creation”.

Note! You also can discover nomadic tasting with the “Naturally!” workshop in the gardens of La Cité du Vin on Saturdays at 3pm, from 15 March to 30 June 2019

Focus on “Season[s], a Tale of Creation”

Highlighting the importance of the creative gesture, Jérôme de Gerlache invites viewers to discover wine production over the course of a vintage and the creation of a glass container designed to hold it.

The producer presents the connection between biodynamic wine production alongside winemaker Stéphane Derenoncourt and the creation of the glass “drinking object” (Vino sospeso) signed by designer matali crasset. The designer and winemaker’s approach reflect the theme of the “Mind-blowing! When art and design take on glass” exhibition.

Divided into five wide-format screenings that punctuate the exhibition, the film by Jérôme de Gerlache shows visitors that the creative gesture, whether that of a winemaker or designer, is a strong and moving act interspersed with doubts, questions, joy and sometimes disappointments.
